Swale Film Society - All The President's Men (15)
Friday 30th March 2018 Doors open 7pm, Film 7.45pm.
Two young reporters and rivals working for the Washington Post, Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman), research the botched 1972 burglary of the Democratic Party Headquarters at the Watergate apartment complex. With the help of a mysterious source, code-named Deep Throat (Hal Holbrook), the two reporters make a connection between the burglars and a White House staffer. Despite dire warnings about their safety, the duo follow the money all the way to the top.
With the release of Steven Spielberg’s The Post, we are showing this classic movie, with its closely linked source material. It's the perfect opportunity to compare the old to the new, and to see how different filmmakers in a different time handle the scandal that rocked the American administration to its core. Interestingly, the publisher of The Washington Post, Katherine Graham (played by Meryl Streep in The Post), is barely mentioned in All The President’s Men, so it will be fascinating to see how and why they marginalised her in the story of one of the greatest political scandals of the 20th century!
